In the schoolyard of Chikuhoku Elementary stands a bronze statue titled “The Wind Rises.” A young figure raises a hand to the brow and looks steadily into the wind, as if reading what lies ahead. The school is now working to open itself up to the wider community, and if you find yourself passing by, it is worth pausing to seek the statue out. Set against the fresh green of the mountains, this young runner — caught in the moment before springing toward the future — waits quietly to greet you.
