On a weekend morning, along the river that runs past the middle school, a handful of local fathers had come out to cut back the summer grass. No one had asked them to; they simply set to work, as though it were the most natural thing in the world. The mountains, the river, the quiet rhythm of village life — all of it is kept this way, by someone’s hands. And the children, watching those broad backs bend to the task, are surely learning, without a word being said, what it means to look after a place.
