Through a break in the clouds, shafts of light fall straight onto the vegetable patch. The corn stands a little taller each day, every leaf taut and alive to its tip. Above the thatched roof the evening sky opens wide, and beyond it the mountain ridge folds soft and blue into the haze — corn in the foreground, the old roof, the hills behind, and the light coming down over all of it at once. The smell of summer rides in on the wind, deepening by the day. This is how it begins — high summer, almost here.
