By July, the paddies of Chikuhoku have gone entirely green — a single, seamless color from one end of the valley to the other. The rice, planted only weeks ago, has grown tall enough now that when the wind comes through, the blades all move together, a long ripple of light running across the field. Beyond the low banks: rooftops, then mountains. The ears have not yet appeared. This is still the quiet season, the long middle stretch of summer, when the plants do their slow, unhurried work. But these green days are not empty. They are the harvest, already in motion.
