From a distance, the mountains of Chikuhoku look endlessly soft. But step into the cedar grove and the air itself changes. Tall, ruler-straight trunks gaze quietly down; the undergrowth underfoot is deep and dense, and light filters through from somewhere far ahead. The gentler a mountain seems, the greater the force it holds within. Nature’s embrace, it turns out, carries tenderness and severity in the same breath.
